A Place to Belong

Rev. Steve R. Smith

I grew up in the Knoxville, TN area and met my wife Carolyn, who is from Morristown, while working in Jefferson City.  We have been blessed with four children, now adults; Angie Spires, Julie Harrell, Whitney Jackson, and our son Tim Smith.  We also have six grandchildren.

I didn’t become a follower of Jesus Christ until I was almost 34 years old. My heart was very selfish and all I really cared about was myself.  Sure, I loved my wife and my children, but what I wanted was more important than what they needed.  I thought having a good job and making a lot of money was all I needed.  When my youngest child was born, he was born with some serious birth defects.  That was when I realized I really needed God in my life.  I prayed to Him and asked His forgiveness for all of the things I had done, and for all the selfishness in my heart.

When I was 36 years old God began to burden my heart to proclaim the ‘Good News’ of Jesus Christ.  I realized in the summer following my 37th birthday that He was telling me, just as He did Abraham, to step out in faith and He would take care of the rest.  So on August 7, 1988 I announced to my church that God had called me and requested their prayers that I might always be found faithful.  That was over 30 years ago and I have found God to be faithful. To Him be the glory!
